Iggy Table No. 1
Nature is difficult to connect with when you live in a city, and even more so with endless media always within reach. It’s why I find so much comfort in the wood shop, working by hand with natural materials. While working, it’s easy to forget the chaos and become aware of the beauty growing all around us.
I feel this same connection very deeply with my dog Iggy. He’s been my shop buddy for twelve years, celebrating my successes and enduring my failures. Throughout the year I’ll be working on a series of pieces inspired by him, this table being the first. I focused primarily on the legs. By not sketching the table beforehand, the final design manifested only as the carving took place, using the countless belly rubs and paw shakes as my guide.
This large occasional table was hand-carved with American cherry sourced from the greater Chicago area. The legs are held together using a traditional process call drawboring, then attached to the top using sliding dovetails, which adds stability during periods of moderate humidity changes.
Please note this table is only available for local pickup or delivery within the greater Chicago area.
